Jane Mitchell
Maritime Archaeologist
Jane has over ten years experience as a maritime archaeologist and heritage specialist in both the public and private sectors. She has worked throughout Australia, on shipwreck sites, wharf and marina upgrades, bridge replacements and large scale infrastructure and energy projects.
More recently, Jane has gained extensive experience project managing and leading underwater archaeological surveys and excavations on WWII sites in various locations across the Pacific, including Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and the Marshall Islands. She is an advocate for how maritime archaeology can be used as a practical tool to search for and recover personnel missing from conflicts world wide.
Jane is highly proficient in developing maritime heritage assessments, conservation management plans and statements of heritage impact. Her skills include archival research, reporting, site recording, underwater photogrammetry, interpretation of remote sensing data, interpretation of heritage legislation, compliance advice, project management and stakeholder consultation and liaison. Jane is adept at leading and undertaking diving projects whether it be for scientific surveys or large scale underwater excavation projects.
Jane holds a Graduate Diploma in Maritime Archaeology from Flinders University and is an experienced SSBA Diver and Supervisor (Part 2), qualified under the Australian Diver Accreditation Scheme (ADAS). Jane also holds a degree in professional writing and editing from RMIT and is skilled at using the Microsoft and Adobe suite of computer software as well as more specialised programs including QGIS and Agisoft Metashape.
Jane is Vice President of the Australasian Institute of Maritime Archaeology (AIMA) and a member of the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS).
